biography

Carole Waller is an internationally renowned textile artist. She makes painted clothes, and paintings on veils of cloth which become installations in three dimensional space. Recently she has developed a way of working with glass to enclose the fragile fabric membrane in a tough monumental material.

Carole's work is concerned with sense of place and our relationship with our surroundings and context. She works with a variety of media and has been exhibiting her painted clothing along with the paintings and installations in galleries internationally for the past fifteen years.

The imagery in her work is often figurative, sometimes abstract and of human scale. .Her latest paintings are unique large and small-scale pieces on fine cloth laminated in glass, which can be placed in a range of indoor and outdoor settings.

In this new work with glass she draws inspiration from site-specific imagery to forge close links to its context, and the exploration of transparency and reflection are central to her thinking. The panels define and create spaces and their intriguing and luminous qualities of colour and translucency fascinate both young and old.

The use of glass has revealed a completely new possibility for making work for public sites because it transforms the transparent etched cloth into resilient architectural structures. Panels can be incorporated into any situation where glass might be used – doors, screens, internal windows and walls, sculptural installations for courtyards, atriums, foyers, waiting areas - either as free-standing artworks or incorporated into the fabric of the building. They can be placed on plinths, partially buried in the ground with invisible fittings, or simply sit on the surface - indoors and out. She also works with glass studios in Germany to realise commissions for stained glass.

The garments are one off original pieces on unprimed fabrics such as silks, cottons, wools and linens – which are made into a collection of clothing ranging from shirts to dresses and coats. They are for anyone to wear, anytime, in any context.
